TRAFFIC SIGNALS

Traffic lights at intersections have three colors - red, yellow and green - from top to bottom or from left to right. At some intersections, however, there may be a single red or yellow light. Some traffic lights are steady, some flash and some are arrows. When traffic control signals are not working, you must always come to a full stop. You must then look and yield the right-of-way before entering an intersection.

STEADY LIGHTS: These lights are red, yellow or green.

Steady Lights

RED LIGHT: Stop at the marked stop line. If there is not a marked stop line, stop before entering the crosswalk. If there is no crosswalk, stop before entering the intersection. Do not go until the light is green and the intersection is clear.

You may make a right turn at a red light unless otherwise noted by a sign "No Turn on Red". Drivers must come to a complete stop and yield the right-of way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before turning.

YELLOW LIGHT: The yellow light warns that the signal is changing from green to red. When the red light appears, you may not enter the intersection.

GREEN LIGHT: You may go after yielding the right-of-way to any pedestrians and vehicles in the intersection or crosswalk.

ARROWS: After yielding the right-of-way to traffic within the intersection or crosswalk, you may go in the direction the arrow is pointing.

Arrow Lights

RED ARROW: The red arrow means do not make the movement shown by the arrow until a green arrow appears. You may make a right turn at a red arrow unless otherwise directed. Drivers must come to a complete stop and yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before proceeding.

YELLOW ARROW: The yellow arrow means the green arrow is ending or that the light is about to turn red.

GREEN ARROW: When the arrow is pointed upward you may go straight ahead only. When the arrow is pointed to the right you may turn to the right. When the arrow is pointed to the left you may turn to the left.

OTHER FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SHARED LEFT TURN LANES: are lanes marked with yellow lines and white arrows. A left turn may not be made from any other lane when a turn lane is provided. The turn lane is used for making immediate turns from or into the roadway only.

Motorized Skateboards

Motorized skateboards, whether powered by gas or electric motors, are illegal when operated on the roadways, sidewalks, or public property in New Jersey. Many municipalities also prohibit their operation through local ordinances.
These vehicles, commonly known as "go-boards" are classified as motor vehicles under the New Jersey Motor Vehicles Laws, N.J.S. 39:1-1, which states: "Motor vehicle" includes all vehicles propelled otherwise than by muscular power, excepting such vehicles as run only upon rails or tracks and motorized bicycles.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has further defined these "go-boards" as motorcycles under N.J.S. 39:1-1 which states: "Motorcycle" includes motor bikes, bicycles with motors attached and all motor-operated vehicles of the bicycle or tricycle type, except motorized bicycles as defined in this section, whether the motive power be a part thereof or attached thereto and having a saddle or seat with driver sitting astride or upon it or a platform on which the driver stands.

These vehicles are legally defined as motorcycles, albeit small ones, under the laws of New Jersey. Under current New Jersey law, these vehicles cannot be registered because they lack fundamental safety equipment. The manufacturer warning label placed on many of the vehicles stating that the vehicle is not in compliance with federal law and are not to be operated on public roadways supports this fact.

Operation of these vehicles on the roadways, sidewalks or public property of this state could result in the operator being cited for operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and the impoundment of the vehicle. If the parents purchase one of these vehicles and allowed an unlicensed driver to operate their vehicle they could face a charge of allowing an unlicensed driver to operate the vehicle under N.J.S.39:3-37-1.

HEADLIGHTS ON, WINDSHIELD WIPERS ON

It's the law in New Jersey to turn your headlights on whenever you use windshield wipers. Headlights must also be used between one-half hour before sunset and one-half hour after sunrise, in bad weather (during rain, smoke, fog, snow and ice storms) and whenever visibility is 500 feet or less. Being able to see clearly while driving is very important. Always make sure your lights are in good working order and clean. Headlights help other drivers see you. Proper use of headlights is vital to safe driving. Parking lights cannot legally be used when headlights are required.
