Common Questions

How long does the application process take?

Generally, first time applicants can expect it to take 6 - 8 weeks. Applicants who have information on file can expect the process to take about 4-6 weeks.

Why does it take so long?

We have to wait for the State and Federal agencies to classify and compare the fingerprints and return them to us.

What about the Federal Instant Check?

"Instant Check" applies to states that have no background check. It does not prohibit states from having stricter requirements.

How do I transport a firearm?

Unloaded and in a closed and fastened gun case or locked in the trunk.

 

Am I required to register guns that I own?

No. New Jersey is a voluntary registration state

I have an assault firearm, can I keep it?

No. Assault weapons as defined under N.J.S.A. 2C:39-1w,  are prohibited from being possessed.

 

I inherited a gun but don’t have an ID card, can I legally get it?

As long as you are legally entitled to have the gun and are not subject to any disabilities, you may take possession of the gun.
