FIREARMS FORMS AND FEES Please read this page in its entirety. What Do I Need? To purchase a rifle, shotgun, ammunition, or to transport any legal firearm, a Firearms I.D. Card is needed. To purchase a handgun you must have a Firearms I.D. Card and make application for a Permit To Purchase a Handgun. If you currently do not have an I.D. Card, you can make application for both the I.D.Card and Handgun permit at the same time. If you currently have an I.D. Card and any information has changed, or you need a replacement or duplicate card, you must complete an Application For Duplicate Firearms I.D. Card.

PERMIT TO PURCHASE HANDGUN ONLY *Need to already have Firearms I.D. card. $2.00 CASH for each permit requested $18.00 Certified Check or Money Order made payable to: Division of State Police, S.B.I. Criminal History Request (Yellow Form available at our headquarters) If you have recently applied for and were issued a permit to purchase a handgun by this department, you may not be required to complete the Criminal History Request form and submit the $18 fee. Please contact Det/Sgt. William Behre if this may be the case. If you apply for two permits that require the $18 fee, you need only one check for $18.

Application For Duplicate I.D. Card Criminal History Request (Yellow Form available at our headquarters) Copy of current card (Change of Address or Duplicate) You will need to surrender old I.D. card upon issuance of new card.
The Process Please bring completed forms and fees to the Communication Center at police headquarters. This includes complete names and addresses of character references. Incomplete forms will delay the process.The yellow forms are only available at our headquarters as they are color coded by the NJ State Police. In cases where fingerprints are required a member of the Detective Bureau will contact you at a later date. In most cases the application process will take 4-8 weeks.
